Ramachandra Guha Releases New Title at Bengaluru International Centre
As Deccan Herald reported, historian and author Ramachandra Guha officially launched his latest publication, Arguments with Gandhi, on 02 October 2026 at the Bengaluru International Centre. The release coincided with Gandhi Jayanti and marked the culmination of a nearly thirty-year journey for the author.
Guha shared that the concept for the book originated in 1996 during his teaching stint at the University of California, Berkeley. After curating a course exploring the leader alongside figures like B R Ambedkar and D R Nagaraj, he realized the global resonance of Gandhi's philosophy through interactions with international students.
What the Book Explores
Unlike standard chronological biographies, this work focuses on critical ideological debates and disagreements that defined Gandhi's public life. Readers will find examinations of:
- Disagreements with B R Ambedkar concerning caste, untouchability, and Dalit representation
- Contrasts between Gandhi's inclusive nationalism and the religious nationalism of Savarkar and Mohammed Ali Jinnah
- Debates with Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries over the ethics of violence and non-violence
- Differing views with Jawaharlal Nehru regarding industrialisation, economic self-reliance, and development
The author noted that writing his two-volume biographical project—which includes Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World—allowed him the necessary time to approach these complex topics with greater nuance.
